History: St. Francis de Sales parish was founded about 1847 by Rev. Z. Leveque. Mass was first celebrated in the courthouse. The first church was built in 1848. Cornerstone for the present structure was laid Feb. 16, 1936, when the venerable Father August Vandebilt was pastor after more than 20 years. When Father Vandebilt died it was discovered that he had left money in his will to pay off the debt on the church. The church stands in the middle of a complex of buildings: school, rectory, convent, youth center-gymnasium. In 1977, the parish undertook a substantial restoration of the church including a presbyterium behind the altar of sacrifice where the bishop and clergy can gather during liturgies. The entire sanctuary floor has been elevated and new marble pulpit installed. Extensive renovations, including a new roof and interior repairs, were completed in 1987.
