  • About the Study

  • Welcome to our second adult formation study for the the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, 'Why We Confess | Rediscover Mercy'.

    This 3-part study focuses on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. 

    Like the last study, (Why We Believe), this study will be made available to  every person  in the diocese of Houma-Thibodaux free of charge.  Each church parish is also invited to share this study with their parishioners in the way they see fit.  

    Our presenters for this study will be Dr. Brant Pitre and Fr. Mark Toups.  
    Dr. Brant Pitre is professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame Seminary and native of this diocese.  He was our presenter for the previous study, Why We Believe.  
    Fr. Mark Toups, a priest of our diocese for 16 years, is Vicar General for Parish Life and Director of our Strategic Planning.

    Each week's study will include a 35-minute video, downloadable notes to follow along, and a list of resource links for further study of the topic at hand.

  • About the Speakers

  • Dr. Brant Pitre


    Dr. Brant Pitre is Professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame, where he specialized the study of the New Testament and ancient Judaism. He is the author of several articles and the books Jesus, the Tribulation, and the End of the Exile(Baker Academic, 2005), Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist (Image Books, 2011), Jesus the Bridegroom (Image Books, 2014), Jesus and the Last Supper (Eerdmans, 2015), and The Case for Jesus (Image, 2016). Dr. Pitre is an extremely enthusiastic and engaging speaker who lectures regularly across the United States. He has produced dozens of Bible studies on CD, DVD, and MP3, in which he explores the biblical foundations of Catholic faith and theology. He currently lives in Gray, Louisiana, with his wife Elizabeth, and their five children.

  • Fr. Mark Toups


    Fr. Mark Toups is a Catholic Priest for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux where he currently serves as Vicar General and team leader for the Diocese’s strategic planning, as well as Admnistrator of the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales in Houma.

    He is also an adjunct faculty member of the Institute for Priestly Formation, where he has served as a professor of Spiritual Theology, spiritual director, and program coordinator for the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola 30-day retreat.

    He is the author and presenter of Oremus: A Catholic Guide to Prayer: an 8-week teaching on the basics of prayer and the spiritual life, as well as liturgical season daily meditations Theotokos, Nativity, Nazareth, and Journey to Jerusalem.

    He received his Master’s of Divinity from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. A college graduate of Nicholls State University, he is a native of Houma, Louisiana.
